Front Door Gallery is now showing “Ether”, a show dealing with the concepts of space; both figurative and literal explorations by local Reno artists. Not just a show about space ships- it’s about the interaction with the existence of the intangible.
The concept for the show was formulated out of a series of critiques done with Margo Pelletier and Lisa Thomas, the directors and producers of the documentary Silvia. Margo, after seeing a handful of student work made the comment about how interesting it was that a lot of artwork dealt with "ethereal space" and how interesting that was both in relation to culture and this generation.
The artwork included involves many medias; invented photographic processes to traditional drawings that question the idea of ethereal space, its bounds depths and dimensions.

ok. thats due tuesday.
we have a meeting tomorrow at 6 in our chairs. - god speed.

Things we still need to be done:

here is a list of things still left to be worked on:

1) Art - list of artists maybe? maybe some images??? Need an idea of this stuff before the Curitorial Statement gets underway...

2) I have the Loan agreement forms - Rob you are picking them up from the gallery on Thurs. between 1-5

3) The Cards: now that we have money ( hopefully enough to cover) I think a good idea would be to get the cards designed and on their way, because we all decided not to mail them out, we are going to rely heavily on word of mouth and distribution. Some people are going to have to volunteer to drop off cards around town, I have a list of a couple main places we want to start with, but we want to drop them off with enough time to circulate too. - we also need someone to write up the press release, i have the format just someone needs to do it.

4) we also need artist contracts. I have not typed that up yet, but that would also be something to bring along when whoever is going to do studio visits does. I took notes from Marji in class on what to change on the form if someone else wants to type them up to have them ready by Fri.

5) Paint - the other group ended up getting money donated, so thats cool. I don't know how sales ended today, but I am hoping we get a little extra to buy some paint. I will check into that situation tomorrow, but Sunday and Monday I will be painting the wall in the Front Door gallery. I am going to Home Depot tonight to get some idea of what color paint to paint the wall, but knowing what some of the art is going to look like would be helpful for this part as well.

ok.
thats the list.
i think we plan on meeting tomorrow/ friday? I know I threatened Rob with vulgar text messages if I did not hear from him by Thursday ( and that still holds true ) but what about Aby and Rebecca?
I will be in the gallery from 1-4 if you guys can make it anytime to kind of divide up the rest of the jobs we have left, that would be great.

one final thing:
when we have the final list of artists, do we want them to write up a little artist bio on themselves or does someone want to take on that task? I suggest we have the artist do it.
thats all I got for now.

Written on the back of a Misc. paper...

here were my notes from class....

Power point:
List the gallery : Front Door
List the Artists:
List the date of the show ( Nov. 29th - Dec. 11)
Photographs of pieces + dimensions

include the list of leadership/organization
and the budget

some things for us to discuss would be what we want the space itself to look like
maybe we could include a layout of the space? also if we want to paint it ( which I think we should, but thats just me)
ok thats the notes i have on the power point.

ether

Marji ok-ed the ether idea via telephone message to me today. She said that she would look over the timeline again but for tomorrow we need a list of possible ideas and I think a little more elaboration on the idea (?) I don't remember I will listen to the message again. Just letting everyone know, she didn't specify that anything new was due, I think we just need to bring something to talk about.

more on puppets/ theme

"Ariel is currently collaborating with poet Leonard Schwartz working on a series of pieces based on images generated by the myth of Orpheus and inspired on Giacommetti's and Brueghel's imagery, among other things.
Ariel decided to explore the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice about nature, beauty, death, and music, after he realized that very few of his many artist friends knew anything about the archaic myth central to the life of the artist. The myth relates to the central question of where our inspiration comes from, and how do we emerge from death and the loss of the soul. What inspires us to go searching for what we love and have lost? "

- i stole that from their website. i think that sounds really cool, if we could maybe elaborate on that idea i think that would make an amazing exhibition!

so, just for an update - have we decided on three ideas to present in class yet?
just to get things rolling on things due tomorrow... this is what I came up with for a breakdown on "leadership organization". I image that we all would like to be a part of all aspects of getting this project off the ground, but here we go. - feel free to object.
- i kind of broke things up four ways ...
1) someone to keep track of funding / publicty ( seeing as i think we discussed most of our money would go towards making artist cards and promoting the show anyways and we might also fundraise with the other group )
2) someone to keep track of all the paper work/ documentation ( we need artist statements, a power point presentation PR statement artist contracts... all that jazz)
3) Someone to stay in contact - make initial contact with artist(s) about exhibition.
4) and for the 4th I kind of just figured there would be someone to make sure everything gets done by the due date, keeps the group organized and on top of things ( think president with not such a totalitarian ruling ).
- we could also decide to not follow this at all, and just turn it in for the assignment.
what does everyone think?

two more dead

idea one.
"ether"
3. the upper regions of space; the clear sky; the heavens.
4. the medium supposed by the ancients to fill the upper regions of space.

this would be in reference to ethereal space:
1. light, airy, or tenuous: an ethereal world created through the poetic imagination.
2. extremely delicate or refined: ethereal beauty.
3. heavenly or celestial: gone to his ethereal home.
4. of or pertaining to the upper regions of space.
5. Chemistry. pertaining to, containing, or resembling ethyl ether.

essentially this idea comes from citiques that we had with Marji's homegirls Margo and Lisa who made that Silvia documentary. Margo after seeing a handful of student work made the comment about how it was interesting that a lot of our work dealt with "ethereal space" and how interesting that was both culturally and generationally, specificaly the latter.

so, my idea for this show would be to call it "ether" and to find work that seems to represent this idea of ethereal space. I already have a fairly big list of artists in mind whose work would fit in with this concept and whom i feel would definately be down to have their work go into the show.

idea two
"drawing" - (a more intersting or specific title could be concieved once the work was narrowed down a bit)

this show would be pretty simple, but i think could be really interesting. i have a few ideas on how it could be approached...the first one would be to try and get drawings from people, faculty especially, who aren't really known for their drawings and try and pair those drawings with drawings that come from students or alumni, or anyone really, that would make sense with said drawing. or we could just try and curate a show of work that all deals with drawing on some level, ideally different levels that show the versatility and importance of drawing.

that's what i have for now, i might revise these in a bit once i havea chance to go over them again.

puppets

This is the website for the puppet troop http://www.nakedpuppets.org/. We have a couple of options as far as they go. The director is a professor and is in the middle of his semester so i don't know if he could come down. However two of the members have a group on their own and there is the possibility of getting them. One of them is in washington and the other is in portland (as far as tickets go) And we could get puppets to put on display, some of them are with them and some are with one of the members in Chico and i would be willing to drive and get those. Also one of the members is a singer this is his website http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=230421967. I think this could be really cool and unique. So let me know if you guys want me to contact them.

They're really cool and have done this all over the country. They could do a performance and then Shawn could play during the opening. Also they could probably stay with my sister so that wouldn't cost...

I think that we could probably pull this off if we wanted to so let me know!
